HAM SLANG
This is a new article on IndiaHamS.com which will feature HAM Slang : ( Slang Means : Very informal usage in vocabulary and idiom that is characteristically more metaphorical, playful, elliptical, vivid, and ephemeral than ordinary language....... As per Dictionary.com)All around the globe, HAMS have developed and used some kind of informal words which literally may mean something else but have a new meaning related to HAM Radio in their local language.
So starting off with some of the Slang words used in New Delhi, India HAM Radio circle and more will follow from all over the globe and this list will be updated as often as new words are added to the list.

- Desi Katta : The real meaning of the this word in Hindi is a country made weapon( single shot country pistol),but in Delhi HAM Radio group, this means a home-made VHF 2mt rig which was developed by none other than VU2IF om Ashutosh In Agra it was the initial 2M rig that were operation on single frequency 145.960.
- Chiddia : This word is used to describe a Military disposal HF man pack equipment.
- Green Bird : Well this term was coined by VU2VTH om Raj, meaning a disposal VHF channelised junk equipment which was made by RCL(Rajasthan Communications Ltd)and which was later modified for HAM frequencies.
- Trishul Antenna : The trishul in Hindi means a type of traditional Indian trident("Three spear" in Sanskrit) This term Trishul Antenna came into existence few years back when in Delhi the VHF 2 mt band was jammed by Long Range cordless phones, interestingly this type of cordless phone was sold with a brand name "NOKIA", the handset even looked like the then popular NOKIA mobile phone model no 5110, This long range cordless phone had strange looking external outdoor antenna which had a striking resemblance with A "trishul" thus came "Trishul Antenna".
- The SOFI Act or SOFI syndrome : This is a special act which was first invented and performed by VU2KD om Sofi on the Delhi VHF NET, when VU2KD used to checkin into the NET and then suddenly vanishing off the frequency for the day and then again reappearing on the band the very next day during VHF NET time. This act is fast developing into a full blown syndrome and is spreading to other fellow HAMs. Origin - VU2XLZ om Frank.
- BVI : BIWI(pronounced as BEE WEE) in Hindi means Wife, and in HAM radio we may have RFI(Radio Frequency Interference) But when this QRM is caused by a wife who is just not interested in HAM radio , it will lead to something which is known as "BVI" or BEE VEE Interference.
- HAM Flew : It is somewhat similar to H1N1 flu,a HAM suffering from this HAM "Flew" virus who was once active, will "FLY" off the frequency and will not be heard on the BAND for a very long time, may be days put together. HAM radio experts are working towards finding a "Vaccine" which can be administered to such HAMs and prevent them from Flying off the frequency/band Origin - VU2XLZ om Frank.
- Walid Walid Yahoo : It may be part of the first ever "Unofficial" "ALIEN" SETI contact programme where in a HAM radio operator had the rare and once in a lifetime opportunity of a QSO with a "Alien" a.k.a "Walid Walid Yahoo".There were a few lucky HAMs who were witness to this live event.
- D.T : D.T or Delta Tango stands for Dinner Time or Dinner Table i.e I am going for My Delta Tango.
- Ohms is Money ,Xtal is Crystal , Beautiful YL Sideband - Brother or sister Katta... as submitted by VU2BX om Sandeep.
- VU#PTT : - It is a ham, or a relative of ham, who keeps mum and loves to press PTT between QSOs. Mr or Mrs VU#PTT is Omnipresent submitted by VU2OEC om Rajesh.
- Modulation : It took me quite a while to figure out what Kerala Hams meant by refering to their need to go have their "modulation" I worked it out! Thus, I have to go for my "Modulation" now = It is time for me to go eat! - Ron, 4S7RO.
- Horizontal Mode : Horizontal mode means lying down in bed or going to sleep.
- Mike India Charlie(MIC) : This slang was used when you are having a Mobile QSO with a HAM and at the same time you are having some one else also in your car, HAMs in Delhi used to say "I am Mike India Charlie" i.e. "I am Mobile In Company" so that the other HAM will know that you are Having someone else accompanying at that point of time. - VU2YI om Sanat
- RF Tuning : Well this will signify that you are enjoying "RF" i.e. you are in "High Spirits".
- 807 : 807 - A 'bottle of beer' in ham terminology (the beer is as 'cool' as a vintage 807 valve/tube for a ham!!!!!) - VU2MUE om Sandeep.
- Boat Anchors : Boat Anchors, started as derogatory ham slang for old tube radios that were being junked, sold for scrap, or (in one eponymous case) actually used to anchor a boat. It is now more of a term of endearment, for neat old radios that you need another guy and a truck to haul home.
- Bare Foot : barefoot - transmitting with a transceiver alone and no linear amplifier.
- Pirate : pirate - Station using an existing callsign and illegally operating on the air.
- Chippi Tola : Its a place in city of Arga (Junk Market), Where you can find old Military disposal, Junk, communication equipment, it would not be very wrong if this place is called as "Heaven for HAMS" - VU3CAV om Rajni.
- Band police : Well as the name suggests, a Band Police is a HAM who would unnecessarily discipline the other HAMs who are on the band by quoting all do's and don't's about HAM Radio as if it is his moral duty and he is the authority on HAM Radio.- VU2YI om Sanat.
- Arm-strong method : This has nothing in common with Neil Alden Armstrong , The famous astronaut, But this term is used when one is using a Directional antenna minus the rotator, and uses his own arms and hands to rotate the antenna mast in desired direction(Note: You have to have Strong Arms to use "Arm-Strong" method of rotation.)- VU2LO om Lokesh.
- Handycap : HandyCap is used to signify the maximum output power that is possible on a hand held transceiver, meaning that your handy has a "Cap" of 5 watt i.e. maximum power.- VU2YK om Rahul.
